India’s hydropower capacity raised to post 50% jump by 2031-32

It's interesting to know that hydroelectric power projects with a total capacity of 15 GW are being constructed in India. The Ministry of Power announced that this will increase the hydro capacity by more than 50% from 42 GW to 67 GW by 2031-32. The Indian Meteorological Department's prediction of higher rainfall this year is good news for the hydropower projects located in the Himalayan region. These projects get base flow from the melting snow, and an increase in temperature will also increase the flow from this source.

It's interesting to note the importance of Pumped Storage Projects (PSPs) in providing greater inertia and balancing power to the grid, especially with the ongoing energy transitions in the country. These projects are also known as 'the Water Battery' and are an ideal complement to modern clean energy systems. Currently, there are PSPs with an aggregate capacity of 2.7 GW under construction in the country, and another 50 GW is under development. However, despite the significance of hydropower generation in the country, the fall in generation in 2023-24 as compared to the previous year cannot be attributed solely to less rainfall.

Natural disasters in the Northern and Eastern regions, comprising over 60% of total hydro energy generation, have severely impacted the operation of several hydropower stations, affecting the generation severely. But the government is reasonably optimistic about the future, with the IMD prediction of a good monsoon in FY 2024-25 suggesting a potential reversal of the trend. The increase in rainfall could contribute to the replenishment of reservoir capacities that were lost during the scarce rainfall in the previous year.

India is undergoing an energy transition, marked by significant additions of solar and wind power to the current energy mix. Hydroelectric power has always played a significant role in the energy landscape of the country, providing essential peaking support to the electricity grid, thus enhancing the reliability and resilience of the power system.

Despite various issues such as natural calamities, geological surprises, and contractual disputes, the government has adopted a proactive stance towards hydropower development, aligning with the ambitious targets set forth by India in the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) under the COP Paris Agreement. These targets are aimed at reducing emissions intensity of GDP by 45% from 2005 levels by the year 2030 and achieving 50% of installed electric power capacity from non-fossil-fuel sources by the year 2030.
